Top: Ship number five: Jadrolinja's Brestova, seen arriving at her namesake port on July 14. Along with the Valun, this ship is perhaps the best chance to experience the unique style of Japanese ferry travel without leaving Europe, being in almost original condition throughout.

Above: Ship number six: One of the Brestova's operating companions on the short (20 minutes) Brestova-Porozina run is the Sis, equally unchanged from her previous incarnation as Red Funnel's Isle of Wight ferry, Netley Castle (seen arriving at Brestova on July 14).

Above: Ship number seven: At the frontline of Jadrolinija's coastal express and international services is the Marko Polo, seen during her day-long Friday lay-over in Rijeka on July 15.

Above: The forward lounge features incredibly uncomfortable hard marble seating!

Above: The Sis is, alas, much less interesting onboard than the Brestova, although perfectly comfortable for this length of crossing. This is the main lounge, barely changed from Red Funnel days.

Above: Jadrolinija's monolithic headquarters in Rijeka, seen on July 15 from the deck of the Marko Polo.

Above: As with most of her Jadrolinija fleetmates, although generally kept spotlessly clean very little refurbishment has been carried out on the Marko Polo, and as such she is in virtually as-purchased condition. This is the forward lounge area on the starboard side.

Above: Another view of the ship's forward lounge - when first built as Larvik Line's Peter Wessel in 1973 she sailed between Larvik and Frederikshavn and the table tops in the bar area to the right still feature inlaid maps of the Skagerrak.

Above: The Marko Polo's aft restaurant. When the ship was under charter to SMZ/Sealink in the mid 1980s as the Zeeland, this area served as first class, with a bar and dance floor to the left, behind the partition, an area now once again deemed part of the restaurant itself.

Above & below: Aboard ship number 8, Jadrolinija's purpose-built Liburnija of 1965. The ship is a time-warp of 1960s ferry interiors, including (above) the amidships lounge and (below) the top-deck Sky Lounge.
