Originally built in 1973 as the Mashu for Japanese service, the Garyounis was sold relatively early in her career to the Libyan operators of Libya-France/Italy services where she was renamed.

The ship operated in this area for several years until being detained in the Maltese dockyard in Valetta where she was under repair. The reason appears to have been unpaid amounts in relation to the refit, but the ship remained there for several years until being sold for scrapping in 2004, leaving Malta under the delivery name of
Dubai Coast 1.
